MLS- In a Surprise Win, the Earthquakes Surpass the Sounders 4-0

After a four-game losing streak, the San Jose Earthquakes finally gained a victory by defeating the Seattle Sounders, who stand at second place in the Western Conference. The 4-0 victory was the first for San Jose over Seattle, with the Quakes losing the last two meetings 2-0 and 2-1. Even with this triumph, the Earthquakes are still in last place in the Western Conference with a 4-10-5 record. San Jose began playing an aggressive game from the very beginning, opening the score in the second minute of the match with an own goal. A shot by Ryan Johnson was deflected by Seattle’s Osvaldo Alonso, flying into Seattle goalkeeper Kasey Keller’s frame to put the score at 1-0. As the half progressed, the Quakes tried to create opportunities but were unable to score, with Keller acting as Seattle’s savior and stopping every attempt. Then, at halftime, Seattle’s James Riley was dismissed with a straight red card, cutting the team down to 10 players. At the start of the second half, despite the reduced roster on the field, Seattle tried to gain the initiative. But its attempt was short-lived, however; at minute 54, the Earthquakes added a second goal with a pass from Shea Salinas to Cornell Glen, who sent the ball to the net. Just 24 minutes after Glen’s score, Darren Huckerby achieved San Jose’s third goal after his first attempt was deflected by Seattle defender Stephen King. The scoring massacre was finished when Salinas captured a Seattle pass and assisted Chris Wondolowski, who scored an eight-yard shot at minute 84. At the end of the match, Seattle coach Sigi Schmid stated how upsetting it was to lose as his team did. Hopefully his players will be able to readjust and learn from the experience. Keller also acknowledged that his team was embarrassed; the Sounders took the win for granted and lost their focus. «I don’t know what the deal was today. From the first minute, we were second-best, and then we take another red card, and we do some stupid things on the field at different times and that’s what probably what disappoints me more. You’re going to have games where you lose, and the other team is better than you at different things, but we just don’t give ourselves a chance sometimes, which is frustrating,» said Keller Seattle will not have much time to refocus, having a midweek exhibition game against FC Barcelona on Wednesday. After that game, the Sounders will return to league play against Real Salt Lake on Saturday. For their part, the Earthquakes will face the Columbus Crew at home on Saturday night; perhaps they will add more points and manage to pull out of the Western Conference cellar.
