Barcelona has chained itself as a slave of its own success

On Saturday 19th December 2009 will always hold special place to all those who support FC Barcelona for the reason that they managed to win their first ever FIFA world club championship held in Abu Dhabi, one of the beautiful designed cities in Asia.

They managed to defeat Estudiantes of Argentina 2-1 in a nerve-racking final played in a fully packed Sheikh Zayed Stadium. Although the score line will look simple on the sports pages, Barcelona was made to sweat for that victory in a way they have never done before. After Barcelona had conceded a goal towards the end of the first half, they had to come from behind and desperately score the equalizer in the 89th minute through Pedro then Lionel Messi struck the winner on 110th minute.

The final was similar to the UEFA Champions league final of 2006 when Barcelona had to come from behind and defeat Arsenal of England.

When Barcelona arrived in Abu Dhabi for the championship, they were considered hot favorites to clinch the title and throughout the tournament they had endure the pressure of coming from behind to win those matches. Anything short of victory was definitely not welcome especially after losing narrowly the world club championship title in 2006.
The Barcelona youth system that trains players on how to possess the ball has greatly paid off. It’s the fundamental reason that Barcelona has produced incredible top-notch talent. Their style of play, which is orchestrated mostly in their usual 4-3-3 system is captivating to watch. Almost every player in their team plays in their respective national team.
The greatest Dream team

In all the three amazing dream teams Barcelona has had over the years, the first one in the early 90’s led by Johan Cruyff, secondly in mid 2000’s guided by Frank Rijkaard and the current one managed by Josep Guardiola is the most successful of them all. The titles the Dream Team III has won in the calendar of 2009 has indeed set a benchmark for all the other to beat. The 2009 class has won six titles that include UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, La liga, Copa del Rey, Supercopa de Espa?a and FIFA World club championship.

What next for Barcelona

Barcelona should now embark on meeting its lifetime challenge that will certainly take more than one Dream team to accomplish. The challenge is to make sure they replicate the successful performance they have achieved this year each season, each tournament and each game they take part in. In other words, Barcelona has chained itself as a slave of its own success. The masters of the slave are the fans who will expect FC Barcelona to always win and never change their beautiful game.
